I am happy to say that Joey is home and feeling much better...and not so happy to say the final bill was significantly higher than what they quoted us. Although we are so happy to have Joey home and healthy, we are feeling very "had" and are quite disappointed that a vet's office would take such advantage of pet owners and be so blatant and rude about it. They never gave us a diagnosis...we still don't know why he had diarrhea, he just got a little stomach bug...he has had the same thing in the past. At his old vet they treated him, kept him for 3 days while he recovered and bathed him before he came home...all for under $200. This bill was more than 5 times that...for one night and no bath.
It seems as though all the testing they did was really quite unnecessary and they played on our love for our dog and tried to scare us with the possibility that he may not make it. We attempted to discuss our concerns about the bill with the doctor and the clinic staff only to be told that we are "lucky" that they are working on a payment plan with us, as they normally require full payment upfront AND that we shouldn't be upset because they did what they had to do to "save our pet's life"...well excuse us...the dog had diarrhea for crying out loud...not cancer!
We have found a different place to take Joey the next time he needs to see a doctor...the place comes highly recommended and the doctor is very highly liked and respected in the community. I have been crusading against the clinic that treated Joey, posting negative ratings on every online listing I can find. I love the internet. I just wish I had been sharp enough to check out the clinic online before taking Joey there!
Anyway, lesson learned. Joey is back to his old self, barking at strangers and trying to bite the guys doing the yard work...through the glass door and across the street. Thanks for all the concern...Joey appreciates it too.
