The Sam Houston "giant"

There is this statue in Huntsville right off of I-45...it's of Sam Houston and it's huge. Since 1999 I have probably passed that statue 500 times, but have never actually been to visit. Last weekend we were up ridiculously early and trying to think of something to do. Dalton just wanted to go in Mommy's Jeep. He wanted to go somewhere...anywhere! We didn't want to go spend money and since hardly anything (except Walmart - where we definitely spend some serious money) is open at 7am on Saturday, we decided to drive up to see the statue.

It was a beautiful drive into the hills and there was a nice cool breeze to break up the heat that early in the morning. There was a little souvenier shop - which wasn't open yet - and some picnic tables. Quite cute! When Dalton saw the statue, he was in awe. "Mommy, look at the GIANT!" he said with a little quiver of the lip. He wasn't interested in hanging around the giant for too long, but at least now we can say we went!

This is a little ampitheater. I thought it was weird that there was just a face sitting in the middle of it. I'm sure there's a story behind this piece of art, but since the information center was closed, I'm guessing it's the face of a previous, less gigantic Sam Houston statue.
